Back in 1997 this web site only began to emerge from our studio. It began as an intent
to provide a small amount of information (a single page) on our original Cambridge,
Ontario, Canada web site. Its intent was to tell visitors to our Cambridge site that
there is a public library system in the city, however, we were given so much information
about the gallery that we decided to create a full section. By early 1998 (about 1/2 year
later) our Cambridge web sites, having outgrown the space we had for them were moved and
given their own virtual domains. Our Cambridge web site was given the URL,
http://www.cambridge.galganov.net while the library and gallery got
http://www.cambridgelibrary.galganov.net and http://www.cambridgegalleries.galganov.net -
respectively.
These sites plodded along giving Cambridgites and prospective visitors information
about the City of Cambridge, the Cambridge Public Library System and the Cambridge
Galleries (also known as The Cambridge Library and Gallery). By November of 1999 the
Cambridge Library & Gallery had completed its second attempt at trying to develop a
presence on the Internet. Library management contacted Galganov & Associates, owners of
these web sites, to demand that these web sites be shut down.
After a week's deliberation, taking into consideration the manner in which the demand
was made, it was decided not to close these web sites. No more was heard of this until
early May of 2000 when the city's lawyers, Pavey Law, contacted Galganov & Associates to
advise them that failing to close all these private web sites, legal action would be
launched requesting the closing of all Galganov's public service web sites (in addition
to suing for damages and other issues).
Recognizing that we did not have the (resources) community dollars to draw on to
protect our right to free speech and to conduct business we surrendered the content (at
least for the time being). We did not, however, agree to surrender our privately owned
(virtual) domain names believing that their claims to confusing similarity were simply
ridiculous.
In the meantime, as our "Cambridge, Ontario, Canada" web site was given its own domain
name (CambridgeWeb.Net), we also decided to give our library and gallery web sites the
more intuitive virtual domain names, "library.CambridgeWeb.Net" and
"gallery.CambridgeWeb.Net" - respectively. Having removed content from these sites, we
were left with the challenge of what to do with these regularly visited domains.
The library web site was soon revamped and now serves a wider, virtual audience as the
CambridgeWeb.Net E-library serving aspiring authors and poets with help in publishing and
distributing their works as well as avid readers with links to free books, book shopping
and more!
Our Gallery web site presented a greater challenge but by the third of June, 2000, it
was decided to use this web site to display a truly unique, original piece of visual art.
Through the summer of 2000, you will be able to watch the development of this new piece
of electronic art.
Please return to see and learn about this new work and what it means to us.
This artwork and its elements will not be posted anywhere else on the Internet. This
will be the only place to see this piece of art.
